Dunia

Dunia has been the engine of the Far Cry series since Far Cry 2 (2008). Ubisoft Montreal made it by modifying CryEngine, the engine Crytek built for the first Far Cry.

History

Crytek showed its X-Isle: Dinosaur Island demo at E3 1999, and Ubisoft had Crytek turn it into Far Cry (2004). When Electronic Arts signed Crytek for another game, Ubisoft kept the Far Cry rights and a perpetual licence to CryEngine. Ubisoft Montreal modified that engine into Dunia for Far Cry 2, adding destructible environments and more realistic physics.

Dunia 2 arrived with Far Cry 3 (2012), with better console performance and global illumination. Far Cry 6 (2021) added ray tracing on PC and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution.
