GameMaker

GameMaker is a game engine Mark Overmars first released in 1999 under the name Animo. Spelunky, Hotline Miami, Undertale and Hyper Light Drifter were made with it.

History

Animo started as a graphics tool with limited visual scripting. YoYo Games partnered with Overmars in 2007 and took over development. Version 8.1 (April 2011) renamed the program GameMaker, GameMaker: HTML5 followed that September, and GameMaker: Studio (May 2012) ran on a runtime rewritten in C++.

Playtech bought GameMaker with YoYo Games in February 2015. GameMaker Studio 2 came out in March 2017 with an editor rewritten in C#, and Opera bought YoYo Games in January 2021. Since November 2023 GameMaker has been free for non-commercial use on every platform except consoles.
