Snowdrop

Snowdrop is the engine Massive Entertainment built at Ubisoft for Tom Clancy’s The Division. Since 2016 other Ubisoft studios have used it for games as different as Mario + Rabbids and Star Wars Outlaws.

History

Massive started work on Snowdrop in 2009, according to former brand art director Rodrigo Cortes, and revealed it at E3 2013 with The Division, which shipped in 2016. That February Massive confirmed that every Ubisoft studio could use the engine. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and South Park: The Fractured but Whole followed in 2017. In June 2021 Ubisoft confirmed an upgraded Snowdrop for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. The Division Heartland, built on Snowdrop, was cancelled in May 2024.
