Source 2

Source 2 is Valve’s current engine. Dota 2 moved onto it in September 2015, and Half-Life: Alyx, Counter-Strike 2 and Deadlock followed.

History

Valve started planning a successor to Source after Half-Life 2: Episode Two (2007) and built a first tech demo in 2010, a remake of a Left 4 Dead 2 map. Outside users first got the engine in 2014 through the Steam Workshop tools for Dota 2. Valve announced Source 2 at GDC in March 2015, with Vulkan support and its own Rubikon physics in place of Havok. Dota 2 Reborn replaced the old Dota 2 client in September 2015, and Valve released Source 2 tools for Half-Life: Alyx in May 2020.
