Gamebryo

Gamebryo is a commercial engine that began as NetImmerse in 1997. Studios licensed it for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3, Civilization IV and Epic Mickey, and Bethesda’s Creation Engine grew out of it.

History

Numerical Design Limited (NDL), founded in 1983 for contract graphics work, released NetImmerse in 1997, and by 2003 it had become Gamebryo. Morrowind (2002) ran on NetImmerse. NDL merged into Emergent Game Technologies in 2005, which added the Gamebryo LightSpeed line.

Emergent cut Gamebryo staff in 2009 and closed its Chapel Hill engineering office by July 2010. In December 2010 its Korean partner Gamebase acquired Emergent’s assets and set up Gamebase USA, and Gamebryo 4.0 (March 2012) merged Gamebryo with LightSpeed. Gamebryo 4.0 is the last documented release.
