Unity

Unity launched in June 2005 at Apple’s developer conference as a game engine for Mac OS X. Monument Valley, Hollow Knight, Among Us, Pokémon Go and Genshin Impact were all made with it.

History

Unity 2.0 (2007) added DirectX, a terrain engine, real-time shadows and networking. Unity supported the iPhone from the launch of Apple’s App Store in 2008, and Unity 3.0 (September 2010) added Android, deferred rendering and Beast lightmapping. Unity 4.0 (November 2012) brought DirectX 11 and the Mecanim animation tools, and Unity 5 (2015) real-time global illumination and WebGL export.

On 12 September 2023 Unity announced a fee per game install. Developers protested, some moved to Godot, and Unity cancelled the fee in September 2024. Unity 6 launched on 17 October 2024 and brought back numbered version names.
