Frame generation

What is frame generation? How DLSS 3 and FSR 3 add frames between rendered ones to raise frame rates, and how it differs from upscaling.

Frame generation creates extra frames between the ones the game actually renders, by interpolating between two of them. Nvidia added it to DLSS 3 and AMD to FSR 3. It raises the displayed frame rate; upscaling, a separate technique, raises the resolution.

Related terms: Upscaling (DLSS/FSR), Frame pacing, Ray tracing.
