Hitbox and hurtbox

What are hitboxes and hurtboxes? The invisible shapes that decide whether an attack lands, in fighting games, shooters and action games.

A hitbox is the invisible area of an attack that can deal damage; a hurtbox is the area of a character that can take it. A hit lands when the two overlap. Fighting-game wikis also call the attacking area an attackbox.
